One of the draws of Minecraft is making automated farms, and there are plenty of Minecraft videos showing exactly how to do this.
The AFK Fish farm
This farm is very useful as it can get you a lot of awesome items early on. Make sure to build one of these to get the most out of your early survival worlds.
Automatic Pumpkin Farm
This farm is very useful for food, but also if you want to go to the end. A carved pumpkin head protects you from enderman.

Although this is impossible to automate, you can the collecting completed with a lever and some flowing water. So the key to this farm is making sure you build it big enough, so that when you collect, you don't need to do it again for a while.
Using wheat to make bread is a very easy food to obtain early on. All you need is a hoe, some seeds and a water source.
The Cow Farm
Getting cows and using their leather is incredibly useful in Minecraft. You will need it for books, which can help to increase your enchanting table. The enchanting table can then increase the quality of your tools, making your productivity a lot better.
The other great thing about cows is that they give you steak, which is one of the best foods in the game. Just make sure you cook it first.
An Iron Farm
This is probably the best, but most tedious farm to build when you start making Minecraft farms. It requires some specifically placed villagers and a zombie jumping up and down. It can be done though and means you have an unlimited supply of iron. When done correctly this can really start to churn iron like crazy.
If you are able to, make sure you try and build one of these farms as they are so useful. You can make iron pick axes without worrying about using up your iron. Then you can just keep on mining to find those diamonds.
