The Basics of LoL for New Players

The Basics of LoL for New Players

League of Legends, also known as League or just LoL, is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). It is a team-oriented strategy game that was inspired from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod, Defense of the Ancients.

League has been around for more than a decade, and now, since its release, the game has become a worldwide phenomenon, with 100 million active users tuning in to play it every month. League is among the most popular professional E-sport game to date and in this article, we’ll go over its basics in case you’re considering picking it up as well!

How does League Work?

The game takes place traditionally on a map called The Summoners Rift, where two teams are pitted against each other.

Each team's goal is to bring down the enemy’sNexus, which is located in the middle of their respective base.

Both teams have to defend their Nexus and attack their opponents simultaneously.

Although League of Legends seems to have a very simple premise, the way you reach your goal in this game canbe very difficult. This is also a factor to consider since it being a PvP game, things can get tense pretty quickly, so make sure you avoid being rude towards other players in order to avoid getting banned from LoL.

That being said, let's look at some of the most basic League of Legends mechanics before we proceed further.

Which types of champions can I choose in League of legends?

In League of Legends, each player has the option to choose from a number of Champions, all of which have different abilities and personalities.

Champions come in various classes. Some are ranged, preferring to attack enemies from a distance, or their opposites, brawlers who like to get up close with their opponents. Others are Arch Mages, who cast powerful spells in order to bring down their foes.

How do I level up my Champion in League of Legends?

There are two ways in which you can better your champion.

One is through leveling up, you gain experience by being in the area where your enemies die. Each level of experience grants you ability points, which you can then use to unlock special abilities and make your Champion even more powerful. At level 6, you can unlock your Champion’s Ultimate ability, which can grant you a major advantage during the faceoffs.

The second way to get stronger is to buy items. You can do this by using the gold that the enemies drop at the shop in your base.

Once you buy an item, it goes straight to your inventory and you immediately gain its ability and powerups.

When you start a League match, you and your team appear in the fountain, which is your base, and here, you can restore your health and buy items from the shop that I just mentioned above.

Once out of the base, you can go down three lanes, the one in the bottom is called Bot, the one in the middle is called Mid, and the one at the top is called Top.

In between these lanes, there is a jungle filled with vile monsters that you can kill to farm gold for items.

The lanes in the map are filled with powerful turrets, your half of the map has your turrets that defend your base, and the enemies’ half of the map has their own turrets that attack you when you get close enough.

You need to destroy these towers before you can target your opponent's Nexus. One-minute after the game begins, both bases at the opposite end of the map will start spawning minions indefinitely.

You need to use these minions as fodder to defeat your opponent towers and heroes. After you have destroyed your enemy's towers and gained enough levels to push enemy heroes off the map, you can target your opponent's base and destroy their Nexus. That, of course, is easier said than done.

These are the basics in League of Legends and, to compete with other players, you need to constantly improve, but we hope that this guide has given you a basic understanding of the game and prepared you enough to begin a League match.
